Updates!!!

It seems like it's been forever! I really wanted to get things updated sooner than this, but I kept getting sidetracked. I've managed to fix some things that got screwed up during a site update... at least for the time being anyway! The CSS to make it all work seems kind of dirty and bloated to me; I'll have to go back and clean it up when I can.

Edit: Seems there are still a few things that don't look quite right. CSS is tricky.

In a previous post, I mentioned that my development/file server died at the same time of the botched update mentioned above. I just couldn't justify spending money on parts to keep the old machine running even though it was completely up to the task. So I built a nice new quad core server, and because it has power to spare, I decided to set it up for 3D rendering. This is great! Problem is, I had been using Ubuntu server for 3-5 years, and it proved impossible to get Softimage batch to run without crashing.

Enter CentOS; widely used, super stable, and fast... however, it's really foreign for someone who's been working with Debian for a few years. Documentation is good, but seems written for IT guys, of which I'm not, and frankly the forums are just not receptive to newcomers. A lot of the tutorials are for production servers, and very little for simple home uses. I'll post my full thoughts on this distro in a later post. I like it, I just wish I could have stayed with Ubuntu. It was better, make that easier, for my uses, it's just not well supported by third party developers.

In short, I've managed to get everything working and in the future I will be testing all updates on my development server before making them live. I've setup automated checks of my hard disks in hopes of catching a failing drive before it's too late. The site looks pretty close to what it did before the SNAFU. I've got Softimage batch rendering working and is super fast. I will also finally be adding a bunch of content over the next few days, and will try to get back into posting on a more regular basis.
